Compression Testing Machine for Concrete Test Specimens
Electric press from 5 kN to 1,000 kN (224,810 lbf) and hydraulic press for compression testing of concrete, blocks, bricks and mortar, and for tensile testing of reinforcing steel used in construction.

The concrete compression testing machine from Biopdi is the electric press rated from 5 kN to 1,000 kN, up to about 224,800 lbf, which breaks concrete cylinders, blocks, bricks and mortar specimens. It is the universal testing machine from the M2 line, set up for compression: the electric motor drives the crosshead, the load cell measures the force and the BioLab software controls the loading rate required by the standard and calculates the strength. By changing the accessory, the same press performs tensile tests on reinforcing steel and flexural tests on prisms.
Biopdi also manufactures the hydraulic press, dedicated to compression testing. This page shows the models, the right capacity for each construction materials test and what NBR 5739 (the Brazilian standard for compression testing of concrete cylinders) requires of the press.

One frame, many tests: what changes from one test to another is the accessory.

The largest model, the MBIOII-1000-M2, reaches 1,000 kN and breaks 15 × 30 cylinders of high-strength concrete. In the compression test, each part of the press has a function:
- 1
Moving crosshead moves down onto the specimen at the loading rate specified by the standard, without shocks
- 2
Load cell measures the force; on the M2 line it is class 1 per ISO 7500-1 (ABNT NBR ISO 7500-1 in Brazil)
- 3
Compression platens support the cylinder, block or prism; with bearing strips, they perform the splitting tensile (diametral compression) test
- 4
BioLab Software converts the rate from MPa/s to kN/s using the measured diameter, calculates fc and issues the report
- 5
Control panel and emergency stop position the crosshead and stop the test
Which capacity for each construction materials test
The breaking force is the strength times the area. The table shows the calculations for the most common specimens.
| Test | Standard | Test specimen | Calculation | Breaking force |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Concrete compression | ABNT NBR 5739 | 10 × 20 cm cylinder | 25 / 40 / 50 MPa × 7,854 mm² | 196 / 314 / 393 kN |
| Concrete compression | ABNT NBR 5739 | 15 × 30 cm cylinder | 25 / 40 / 50 MPa × 17,671 mm² | 442 / 707 / 884 kN |

Choose a capacity above the highest expected force. A lab that breaks 10 × 20 cylinders up to 40 MPa (314 kN) is well served by the 600 kN press; one that breaks 15 × 30 cylinders of 50 MPa (884 kN) needs the 1,000 kN model. Also check the range verified in the calibration certificate: it must cover the lower forces, such as the 38 kN of a prism in flexure. Read our guides on NBR 5739, concrete test specimens, NBR 6136-2, NBR 15270-2, NBR 13279, NBR 7222, NBR 12142 and NBR 7480.
What NBR 5739 requires of the press
Three requirements decide whether the test result is valid.
Loading rate
Continuous loading without shocks at 0.45 ± 0.15 MPa/s until failure. On a 10 × 20 cylinder, 0.45 MPa/s is 3.53 kN/s. BioLab performs this conversion using the measured diameter and holds the rate throughout the test.
Machine class
Class 1 or better in testing laboratories; class 2 only in on-site laboratories and concrete batching plants. The class belongs to the machine verified per NBR ISO 7500-1, not just to the load cell.
Spherically seated platen
The upper platen rests on a spherical seat, which rotates to bear evenly on the end of the specimen and prevents eccentric loading. State the standard in your request so the proposal includes compatible platens.
Press calibration follows ABNT NBR ISO 7500-1; our article on universal testing machine calibration shows what to check in the certificate.
Frequently asked questions
The most common questions before buying a compression testing machine for test specimens.
What machine is used to break concrete test specimens?
A compression testing machine, electric or hydraulic, with a capacity above the failure load of the specimen and a spherically seated upper platen. For 10 × 20 cm cylinders up to 40 MPa, the force reaches about 314 kN; for 15 × 30 cm cylinders at 50 MPa, about 884 kN. The Biopdi electric compression testing machine ranges from 5 kN to 1,000 kN (224,809 lbf).
What is the standard for testing concrete specimens in compression?
ABNT NBR 5739:2018 (the Brazilian standard) defines the compression test of cylindrical concrete specimens: continuous loading at 0.45 ± 0.15 MPa/s until failure and strength fc = 4F/(πD²). Molding and curing of the specimens follow ABNT NBR 5738 (the Brazilian standard for specimen preparation and curing).
What is the Biopdi electric compression testing machine?
It is the Biopdi M2 line universal testing machine (UTM) fitted with compression platens. The force comes from an electric motor that drives the crosshead through ball screws, with no oil or hydraulic pump, and the machine ranges from 5 kN to 1,000 kN (224,809 lbf). That is why it handles the compression tests used in civil construction and, by changing the fixture, also tensile tests of steel and flexural tests of prisms.
Electric or hydraulic compression testing machine: which one to choose?
A hydraulic machine applies the force through an oil-filled cylinder and is dedicated to compression. An electric machine controls the crosshead speed with the motor and performs compression, tensile and flexural tests on the same frame, with the software calculating the result. For a lab that only breaks cylinders, both will do the job; for those who also test steel, prisms or blocks, the electric machine avoids a second piece of equipment. List your tests in the quote request and our team will recommend the right option.
What capacity do I need to break concrete test specimens?
The failure load is the strength times the area. A 10 × 20 cm cylinder at 40 MPa fails at about 314 kN, and a 15 × 30 cm cylinder at 40 MPa at about 707 kN. Choose a capacity above the highest expected force, as in the table on this page, and check on the calibration certificate that the verified range also covers the lower forces the lab will measure.
Does the electric compression testing machine meet NBR 5739?
The standard requires continuous loading at 0.45 ± 0.15 MPa/s, a class 1 or better machine in the testing lab and a spherically seated upper platen. The BioLab software converts the rate in MPa/s to kN/s from the measured diameter, and the M2 line load cell is class 1 per ISO 7500-1 (ABNT NBR ISO 7500-1 in Brazil). The class of the assembled machine is determined by verification at the calibration laboratory. State the standard in your request so the proposal includes the compatible platens.
How many kN is 100 tons?
One tonne-force equals 9.807 kN, so 100 tf is about 981 kN. The largest model, the MBIOII-1000-M2, has a capacity of 1,000 kN (224,809 lbf), a little more than 100 tonnes-force.
Can other tests be performed on the same machine?
Yes, because it is a universal testing machine. With grips, it performs the tensile test on steel bars per NBR 7480 (the Brazilian standard for steel reinforcing bars); with the flexural fixture, the flexural tensile test on prisms per NBR 12142; with bearing strips on the platens, the splitting tensile test (diametral compression) per NBR 7222. You change the accessory, not the machine.
What is the difference between an electric press and a universal testing machine?
At Biopdi, there is no difference in the equipment: the electric press is the universal testing machine configured for compression. The name changes with the application. In civil construction, where labs break cylinders and blocks, people usually say press; in metals and polymers, where labs run tensile tests, they usually say universal testing machine or tensile testing machine.
Does the press need to be calibrated?
Yes. The class required by NBR 5739 is the class of the machine verified per ISO 7500-1 (ABNT NBR ISO 7500-1 in Brazil) by a calibration laboratory, and the certificate states the force range in which the class was achieved. The article on universal testing machine calibration explains the process and what to check in the certificate.
