Consolidation Test Press (Oedometer Test)
Manual and 50 kN electric automatic consolidation press, with 2-inch and 3-inch fixtures, for the oedometer test to ABNT NBR 16853:2020 and DNER-IE 005/94.

The Biopdi consolidation press performs the consolidation test, or oedometer test, to ABNT NBR 16853:2020(the Brazilian standard), DNER-IE 005/94 (Brazilian highway method) and ASTM D2435: it applies to the soil specimen, confined in a ring and drained, stages of vertical load held constant, and measures the change in height over time. These readings yield the compression index, the preconsolidation pressure and the coefficient of consolidation, which predict how much and how fast the soil will settle.
There are two models: the manual consolidation press, with a lever and slotted weights, and the electric automatic consolidation press. The automatic model is the same machine as the CBR / Marshall test press: the PCM-5k CBR, Marshall and Consolidation Press, electromechanical, 50 kN (11,240 lbf), with constant load control, LVDT, touchscreen display and 2-inch and 3-inch consolidation fixtures. If you have the automatic CBR press, you run the consolidation test by changing the fixture.
The test procedure, the calculations and a worked example are in the article on the consolidation test.

Consolidation Press: Manual

Consolidation Press: Electric Automatic (PCM-5k)
Biopdi's electric automatic consolidation press runs the consolidation test automatically: the operator sets the maximum force, the time and the displacement limit on the touchscreen, and the press applies and holds the load, records the specimen height at the test times and saves the data to the SD card, to generate the report on the computer.
The same machine accepts the CBR and Marshall fixtures, load cells of various capacities and LVDTs, and handles CBR, Marshall and consolidation tests in the same laboratory.
Consolidation test standards
The consolidation press is used for tests under these standards:
ABNT NBR 12007, still cited by many laboratories, was canceled on July 20, 2015; its technical content is now in NBR 16853:2020 (the Brazilian standard for the one-dimensional consolidation test). For other standards, get in contato our technical team.
Biopdi has its own technology to develop, manufacture and sell any type of soil testing equipment, so any machine parameter can be customized for our customers. Get in contato to learn more.

Technical specifications: automatic electric

Tests
- One-dimensional consolidation (oedometer) test: load stages doubled at each step, with height readings for up to 24 h per stage, to obtain the compression index, the preconsolidation stress and the coefficient of consolidation. 2" or 3" consolidation fixture, load cell and LVDT; ABNT NBR 16853:2020, DNER-IE 005/94 and ASTM D2435.
- On the same automatic press: the CBR test, with the CBR fixture, and the Marshall test, with the Marshall fixture. See the CBR / Marshall test press.
For soil strength, Biopdi manufactures the direct shear press and the triaxialpress, which also performs the resilient modulustest. The step-by-step oedometer test procedure is in the article on the consolidation test.
Load cells
Interchangeable load cells for the automatic electric consolidation press.
Fixtures and accessories
Fixtures and accessories used on the consolidation test press.

LVDT (displacement transducer)
50 mm linear variable displacement transducer, mounted on the cell, that measures the change in specimen height.

Load cell
Measures the load applied to the specimen; interchangeable, from 5 to 5,000 kgf (0.05 to 50 kN).

Consolidation cell 2" and 3"
Oedometer cell with rigid base, ring, porous stones and rigid loading cap; allows the specimen to be submerged.

Slotted weights
Slotted weights for the manual consolidation press, in several sizes, up to 500 kgf (4.9 kN).
2" and 3" consolidation fixtures: parts and dimensions
Biopdi supplies two consolidation fixtures, 2 inch (D2P-ADS) and 3 inch (D3P-ADS). Each one is a consolidation cell with a rigid base, a ring to confine the test specimen, porous stones and a rigid loading cap, and allows the specimen to be submerged. Both use the same loading assembly, mounted on the press: the figures below show this assembly with its parts identified and the dimensions of each fixture.
For assembly, the fixture is centered in the recess of the machine; a porous stone, the ring with the sample and another porous stone are placed, the outer ring closes the set and the base is hand-tightened. Before the test, the LVDT is set to the zero position and the pin is checked to be centered on the fixture.

Frequently asked questions
The most common questions about the consolidation press and the oedometer test.
What is a consolidation press used for?
The consolidation press runs the consolidation test, or oedometer test: it applies to the soil specimen, laterally confined in a ring and drained, stages of vertical load that are held constant until consolidation is complete, while the change in height is measured. The test yields the compression index Cc, the preconsolidation pressure and the coefficient of consolidation cv, which predict how much and how fast a clay layer will settle.
What is the current standard for the consolidation test?
ABNT NBR 16853:2020, Soil: one-dimensional consolidation test (the Brazilian standard). It absorbed the technical content of NBR 12007, withdrawn on 07/20/2015, and remains in force. In highway work in Brazil, DNER-IE 005/94 is also used, and laboratories that follow US standards use ASTM D2435/D2435M.
Is the consolidation press the same as the CBR and Marshall press?
Yes. Biopdi's electric automatic consolidation press is the PCM-5k CBR, Marshall and Consolidation Press, rated at 50 kN. Changing the fixture changes the test: oedometer cell for consolidation, penetration piston for CBR and compression mold for Marshall. If you already have the automatic CBR / Marshall test press, you only need the consolidation fixture and a suitable load cell.
What is the difference between the manual and the automatic consolidation press?
On the manual press, the load comes from slotted weights, up to 500 kgf (4.9 kN), multiplied by a lever, and the height is read on a dial indicator. On the electric automatic press, the ball screw applies the load and holds it constant at each stage, the load cell measures the force, the LVDT measures the height, and the press takes the readings at the test times and saves the data to the SD card.
Which consolidation fixtures does Biopdi supply?
Two, 2-inch and 3-inch (D2P-ADS and D3P-ADS). Each is an oedometer cell with a rigid base, specimen ring, porous stones and a rigid loading cap, and it allows the sample to be submerged. NBR 16853 requires a ring with an inside diameter of at least 50 mm and a diameter-to-height ratio of at least 2.5; state the ring diameter your laboratory uses when you request a quote.
How does the automatic press record the test readings?
The press reads the specimen height at 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, 1, 2, 4, 8, 15 and 30 minutes and at 1, 2, 4, 8 and 24 hours after each load increment, plus more if needed. These are the times of DNER-IE 005/94, the same as in NBR 16853, and they are used to plot the height versus log of time and versus square root of time curves from which cv is obtained.
Which load cell should I choose for the consolidation test?
The force is the stage pressure times the ring area. In a 63.5 mm ring taken to 1,280 kPa, the maximum force is about 4.05 kN, and a 500 kgf (4.9 kN) load cell covers the test with better resolution in the low stages. The 50 kN of the press is more than enough; what you size is the load cell, interchangeable from 5 to 5,000 kgf.
How long does a consolidation test take?
Each load stage usually lasts 24 hours, and the pressures double at each stage (about 10, 20, 40 kPa and so on) until the virgin compression range is defined; then come at least three unloading stages. A complete test takes one to two weeks, which is why automatic data acquisition spares the operator the overnight readings.
