BioLab Software

Biopdi's software for universal testing machines: it sets up, runs, analyzes and documents the test, from the specimen to the report.

The BioLab is the software Biopdi developed to operate its own universal testing machines . It controls the machine, acquires force, position and up to 4 extensometer channels, calculates the results according to the selected standard or method, and generates reports in PDF, HTML and CSV. It runs on a computer with Windows 10 or later, connects to the machine via USB or serial port, and works without an internet connection.

Beyond the test itself, BioLab handles the lab routine: it schedules equipment use, separates tests by user, compares batches with statistics, records in an audit trail who made each change, and protects the database with an automatic backup before every update.

Test types and results

When you select the test type, the interface asks for the parameters of that test, such as specimen geometry, span, notch or sled mass, and offers the corresponding indicators:

TestWhat BioLab calculates
Tensile and compressionMaximum force, maximum position, maximum stress, yield strength, elongation, reduction of area, Young's modulus and elastic recovery. Area calculated for rectangular, tubular or cylindrical cross-sections, or from linear mass.
3-point flexuralMaximum force, deflection, modulus of elasticity and maximum stress, with a pass/fail condition based on the modulus.
4-point flexuralThe same results as the 3-point flexural test plus flexural strength, with a pass/fail condition based on the modulus and on the strength.
Notched 3-point flexuralMaximum force, maximum position, LOP and the values fR1 to fR4 at crack mouth opening displacements CMOD 1 to 4.
CreepMaximum force, yield stress and yield elongation, stress and elongation at break.
Coefficient of friction, sliding blockStatic and kinetic forces and static and kinetic coefficients of friction.
Coefficient of friction, coil standStatic and kinetic forces and coefficients of friction, taking the duct angle into account.
RasgamentoMaximum force and tear strength in N/mm.
Stress at specified strainStress at up to 3 strains defined by the operator, plus force, maximum stress, elongation and yield.
Force at specified displacementForce at up to 3 target displacements or lengths, plus force at break, maximum stress and elongation.

The operator chooses which indicators to follow during the test without affecting acquisition: all data are recorded, and the selection only defines what is highlighted on screen and in the report.

Built-in standards and saved methods

BioLab includes a built-in standards library, expanded with every software update. When you apply a standard, such as ABNT NBR 7190-2:2022 (the Brazilian standard for timber testing), the software loads the parameters it requires and leaves the rest to the operator.

A Method goes further: it stores the complete configuration of a test, including parameters, stop conditions, extensometer and custom calculations, with a name and description. Created by the Administrator or Supervisor, it is reapplied with a single click, which ensures every operator runs the test the same way.

Execution: linear test, script and cyclic tests

In a linear test, the crosshead moves in a single step, up or down, at constant speed in mm/min, constant force in N or variable force in N/s. The test ends at the selected stop condition: percentage force drop, maximum force, maximum displacement or time, with the option to pause by position, force or time.

The script mode splits the test into steps, each with its own movement, speed and setpoint. A repeater sends execution back to an earlier step as many times as defined: three loading and unloading steps with 50 repetitions result in 50 cycles. A window tracks the status of each step during the test.

Features that prevent lost tests:

  • Preload: reaches the defined load before data acquisition starts.
  • Slip detection: detects the sudden force drop of a specimen that has slipped out of the grips.
  • Automatic switch from extensometer to encoder at the defined strain, so the extensometer can be removed before fracture.
  • Batch testing: series of specimens with the same parameters, numbered automatically; recommended for series of 5 to 30 specimens.

Custom calculations

When the lab needs a quantity that is not in the standard list, such as an in-house correction factor or a stress over a different area, BioLab lets you create the indicator with a formula. Variables include force, position and time, the maximum, minimum and mean values, the 4 extensometer channels, stress and strain, the specimen geometry and the indicators of the active standard itself. Functions include log, ln, exp, abs, square root and trigonometric functions.

The calculation is validated before saving, is stored in the Method and appears in the report alongside the standard indicators. The validity of the formula with respect to the standard is the lab's responsibility.

Analysis, report and comparison dashboard

Once the test is finished, the operator marks the elastic region with two clicks on the chart, and BioLab draws the Young's modulus line and the parallel line with an adjustable 0.2% offset to obtain the yield strength. Final area and final length complete the reduction of area and elongation.

In the Report, every saved test can be reviewed with zoom, point-by-point value readout and unit changes without rerunning the test, then exported to PDF, HTML or CSV. Your company details are added to the report automatically.

In a Dashboard, several tests of the same type are overlaid on one graph, and BioLab calculates the maximum, minimum, mean and standard deviation of each result. The software only compares tests of the same type, with the same units and the same standard.

Users, traceability and audit trail

Each operator logs in with a username and password. The Administrator creates user accounts with the Supervisor or Operatorprofile, which differ in their access to tests and settings. Each user sees only their own tests; the Administrator sees all of them. Users can be deactivated instead of deleted, so the test history is preserved.

The audit trail records automatically, with no need to enable it, who did what, when and with what result, in eight categories: logins, data changes, configuration, backup, system events, test lifecycle, user administration and exports. Each event is flagged as completed, failed or denied for lack of permission. Access is restricted to the Administrator and Biopdi support, so the people being audited cannot view or export their own records, and exports to CSV or XLSX are logged as well. This feature is designed for laboratories that must demonstrate control over changes to data and configuration.

Database, backup and operational safety

Tests are stored in the default local database (SQLite) or in a corporate database: MySQL, SQL Server, Oracle or PostgreSQL. When a new version needs to change the database structure, BioLab copies the local database before changing anything and aborts the update if the copy fails; with a corporate database, it asks for confirmation so the IT team can make the backup. Manual backups can be saved to a USB drive, a network location or the cloud.

During operation, the software works together with the machine's safety devices:

  • With the safety door open, the maximum speed automatically drops to a configurable safe value, and a test can only start with the door closed.
  • The emergency stop button, upper and lower limit switches and the load cell limit are shown on screen in real time.
  • The load cell is recognized automatically, and the machine is always limited to its rated capacity.
  • Equipment errors, such as overload or communication failure, are interpreted and shown as descriptive messages, and critical errors stop the test.

The safety devices comply with the Brazilian machinery safety standard NR-12.

Laboratory routine

  • Equipment scheduling: calendar with bookings from 15 to 300 minutes, with no overlaps.
  • Camera and video: view the specimen during the test, capture frames and record video.
  • Automatic connection: on startup, the software reconnects to the last port used successfully.
  • Total test counter for the machine, useful for scheduling preventive maintenance.
  • Touchscreen use: virtual keyboard and landscape and portrait layouts that adapt to the monitor orientation.
  • Support inside the software: user manual, equipment description, report template, standards and calculations document, video tutorials and update check.

Frequently asked questions

What is BioLab?

It is the software developed by Biopdi to operate its universal testing machines. It controls the machine, acquires force, position and up to 4 extensometer channels, calculates the test results and generates reports in PDF, HTML and CSV.

Which tests can BioLab set up?

Tensile and compression, 3-point and 4-point flexural, notched 3-point flexural, creep, coefficient of friction with a sliding block and with a coil stand, tear, specific stress and specific force. With script mode, it also runs cyclic and multi-stage tests.

What computer do I need?

A computer running Windows 10 or later, 64-bit, with an Intel Core i5 processor or equivalent, 8 GB of RAM (16 GB recommended for long or cyclic tests or video recording), 500 MB of free space for the installation and a USB or serial port for the machine. Java is bundled with the installer.

Does BioLab work without an internet connection?

Yes. Testing, reports and the dashboard all work offline. The internet is only used to check whether a new version of the software is available.

Does the software include testing standards?

Yes. It has a library of built-in standards, expanded with each update. When you apply a standard, the software loads the parameters it requires. The lab can also save the complete configuration of a test as a Method and reapply it to any later test.

Can it run cyclic tests?

Yes, through script mode. Each stage has its own movement, speed and setpoint, and a repeater sends execution back to an earlier stage as many times as defined. For example, three loading and unloading stages with 50 repetitions give 50 cycles.

Can I create my own calculations?

Yes. Custom calculations build indicators by formula from force, position, time, extensometer channels, specimen geometry and existing indicators, with functions such as log, exp, square root and trigonometric functions. The formulas are saved in the Method and come back with it.

Does BioLab have an audit trail?

Yes. The software automatically records logins, data and configuration changes, backups, tests, user administration and exports, with who did what, when and with what result. Access is restricted to the Administrator and Biopdi profiles, and the log can be exported to CSV or XLSX.

Where are the tests stored?

In the default local database (SQLite) or in a corporate MySQL, SQL Server, Oracle or PostgreSQL database. With the local database, the software makes an automatic backup before any structure update and allows manual backups to a USB flash drive, network or cloud.

How is the software updated?

From the Support tab, using the Check for updates button. If a new version is available, the software walks you through the steps. When the update changes the database structure, the local database is copied first; with a corporate database, the software asks for confirmation so that the IT team can make the backup.
